Thanks to all who joined us online in November 2021 for the Soas Alumni Book Club with author and journalist Hafsa Lodi @hafsalodi, where we discussed her book: Modesty: A Fashion Paradox @neemtreepress .
Our talk covered the different points the author talks about in her book, including the rise of modest fashion, it becoming a global industry, the different interpretations of modest fashion, referencing designers, models and influencers. We touched on the notion of cultural appropriation.
We discussed feminism, labels/labelling (and none labels), modest fashion for men and sustainable, ethical and eco-friendly modest fashion, which Hafsa speaks about in her book.
We also spoke about fashion being a tool for all to express themselves through.
Thus fashion as a tool can empower, shatter stereotypes and prejudices and bring in lots of perspectives, cultures and narratives.
Our discussion also explored the notion of ‘inner modesty’ ,social media—its power and influence, and consumerism which Hafsa goes through in the book.
We spoke about individual choice, and respect for all women and their own path through fashion.
For more on this topic do check out @hafsalodi page and her book which is very well researched and written, and goes through in detail all about modest fashion; a really interesting read.
Hope you can all join us for the next #bookclub @soasalumni @soasuni check here: www.socialworld.org for all of @soasalumni different events,
(including the Soas Alumni Book Club and Art Breath x SOAS events )
Thanks again to all who joined us and big thanks to Harris and Marina ✨✨🙌🙌
