A wonderful evening in January 2020, at SOAS University with a filled room, discussing The Unfair Advantage: BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD-WINNER: How You Already Have What It Takes to Succeed, by Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba.
How to plan our work life through any inequalities present in the world? Should we work hard or work smart? Does meritocracy exist, a myth or both? Is any one of us capable of succeeding? After all, we are constantly sold stories about successful people making it through their hard work. And yet, are we told the whole story of their success, what else lies behind a successful company or person?
The Unfair Advantage, a book by Ash Ali and Hasan Kubba looks into these questions. The authors go behind the image of success and guide us on towards unlocking the tools or advantages we each have, in order to ease our own path to success, all whilst asking us to take into consideration how we would define that, a positive social impact, high profits, or maintaining a good life-work balance.
The book is written in an approachable way, it gives us insight onto our potential through their MILES Framework. Just as we may consider what is unique about our business and fill that out in a business plan, this framework is about thinking of what is unique about us.
The Unfair Advantage, goes beyond just being a business book, an array of philosophy and an outlook on life can be found, reminding us to be grateful for whatever we may have and reframing our viewpoint on how we should see life and any difficult aspects we may be faced with.
I had the pleasure of being in conversation with the authors for Book and Talk, SOAS Alumni’s 1st Book Club, the authors are engaging and dedicated to spreading their message, as well doing good in the world. They have produced an inspiring and important read that stem from their entrepeunerial journey. A thought provoking book that makes us reflect.
Towards the end of our conversation, the notion of a monopoly of industries impacting our world and affecting our successes, was mentioned by the authors, maybe this could be a second book? And if so I await it with anticipation.
